Visiting the Past

Gillian Hovell

Published 17th August 2009 at £12.99, paperback original

An introductory guide to help

the keen amateur understand and interpret

our national monuments and landscape

Archaeology is all around us and yet, despite the success of programmes such as Time Team, there is not much information available to the interested beginner on how to spot archaeology in their local landscape, and if they find something how to identify it. Gillian Hovell attempts to rectify this by providing a guide to going out there and discovering archaeology for yourself.

A period-by-period introduction to the archaeology of Britain, from the Stone Age to World War II.
Covers topics such as the best surviving sites to visit and what life was like in society at that time.
Where to go and what to look out for.
Tells you how to identify features and take records.
Focuses on typography: identifying artefacts and features from their particular style and shape.
Aimed at beginners and amateurs.
32 colour and 80 black and white illustrations.

“Welcome to the story of Britain.  It’s a tale we’ve heard many times and in many ways but this time it’s personal.  This is history we can reach out to and touch for ourselves: it’s all around us, etched on our hillsides and filling our valleys.  This is a journey to places you thought you knew – but with this book as a guide, you’ll have a new map to explore them with and a fresh viewpoint to see them from.

If you’re a complete novice, a TV history fan or a practised amateur archaeologist, then this book is for you - and if you enjoy walks in the country or like seeing a new point of view, then getting to grips with our islands’ archaeology is for you.”

Gillian Hovell is a writer with a particular interest in archaeology. She has been involved in various archaeological digs since 2003 and has co-led the Nidderdale Iron Age archaeology group since 2004, investigating an Iron Age settlement. She lives in Nidderdale in Yorkshire, but was born and lived in Surrey for 40 years and still has many contacts in that area.
